Incorporated March 11, 1971 with a population of 2,284, the town has enjoyed a steady growth to its current population of approximately 18,000 persons.
The town, following tradition established when the Mint Hill community was first settled in 1750, has tremendous community spirit and pride. Within the town are many churches and excellent schools. Also, there are recreational facilities including private and public golf courses and country clubs. Primarily a residential community, the business district has shown intensified development in recent years with approximately 285 businesses and professional services available.

The Town Manager performs the following services:
Serves as Chief Administrator of the Town
Responsible to the Board of Commissioners for administering all municipal affairs placed in his charge
Serves as personnel officer
Directs/supervises administration of all departments offices, and agencies of Town government
Makes recommendations on any measures to Board of Commissioners
Assures all laws of the State, Town Charter, and local ordinances, resolutions, and regulations of the Board of Commissioners are faithfully executed
Serves as finance officer and prepares annual budget and capital program

The Town of Mint Hill is in a unique position of establishing its own police department. Since 1995, the town contracted with the City of Charlotte for police services. Prior to 1995, Mecklenburg County Police provided police services for the town. On September 26, 2002, the Board of Commissioners unanimously voted to establish the Mint Hill Police Department. The department initially consisted of 22 sworn police officers, five police supervisors, an administrative assistant, and a police chief. The department had eleven vehicles.
