The Town of Cornelius is managed by the Administration Department consisting of the Mayor, Board of Commissioners, Town Manager, Assistant Town Manager, and Town Clerk. The Mayor and Board of Commissioners are elected for four-year staggered terms during odd-numbered years. They are responsible for policy and service development for the citizens of Cornelius. The Town of Cornelius currently operates under a Council-Manager form of government. The Board of Commissioners establishes policies which are then carried out by the Town Manager and supporting staff members.

The Cornelius Police Department provides police protection, animal control, boating safety, child fingerprinting, communications (911), community watch, crime prevention, senior contact programs, shore patrol, task force, and assists with all EMS and Fire emergencies within the city. All officers are active in the Community Policing Effort.
